Newcastle City Council Waste Strategy Consulatation

Newcastle City Council are obliged to carry out a public consulatation process as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) they are undertaking as part of the waste strategy revision. As a partnership organisation with the City Council BAN Waste have a central role to play in this process. At the moment the process is at the point where the various options to be considered as part of the consulatation process are being finalised.

At the beginning of February 2006, Les Clark at the City Council sent out a list of 10 options that had been drawn up until that point. Each option involved some different combination of recycling, composting, landfill or incineration (including pyrolysis and RDF). You can view this original list here. Les saw option 1 in this original list as representing BAN Waste's favoured option arising from past reports and the select committee process, but invited us to submit other options. BAN Waste did not think that option 1 truly representd BAN Waste's favoured options and Liz and Paul have been busy trying to consult with members regarding additional options. A revised list of 12 options has been drawn up by Liz and can be viewed here. Options 11 and 12 represent BAN Waste's alternative options, which only differ as to whether we treat garden wast aerobically or anaerobically.

We also believe strongly that this number of options is too many to put forward to the next phase of consultation and that the ones involving incineration in any form or production of refuse derived fuel (RDF) should be dropped at this stage on the grounds that they run counter to both Liberal Democrat and Labour Policy at the local level.
